The short version

Arugula transcribes speech on your Mac. Dictation audio is not uploaded to us, and core dictation works without an account or internet connection.

Speech and audio

Arugula uses your Mac's microphone to capture speech while you hold the dictation key. Audio is processed entirely on-device using a local AI model. Your voice data is:

• Never sent to SheetGenius or a cloud transcription service
• Processed in memory and discarded by default
• Saved on your Mac only if you deliberately turn on the developer capture setting

Saved corrections

When you save a correction, Arugula stores the phrase mapping locally so it can reuse it later. If iCloud Drive is available, Arugula also writes saved phrases to your Arugula folder there so they can follow your Macs. If you add a hosted sync key, Arugula sends your manual phrase mappings to SheetGenius's sync service. Neither sync path includes dictation audio.

• Local corrections can be deleted by removing Arugula's data folder
• iCloud copies remain under your Apple account and can be removed from iCloud Drive
• Hosted sync is optional and stays off until you add a sync key
• Removing a sync key stops future syncing but does not automatically delete the hosted copy

Accessibility access

Arugula requests Accessibility access to insert transcribed text at your cursor position. This permission is used solely for text insertion. Arugula does not read, log, or transmit any content from other applications.

Microphone access

Arugula requests microphone access to capture speech for transcription. The microphone is only active while you hold the dictation key. You can revoke microphone access at any time in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

Network access

Core dictation does not make network requests. Arugula connects to the internet only when you choose a feature that needs it: hosted saved-phrase sync or a relay endpoint. iCloud Drive sync is handled by macOS. Arugula has no automatic updater and no analytics within the app itself.

Relay endpoints

If you configure a relay endpoint and use it, Arugula sends the transcribed text, the source application's name and bundle ID, and the capture time to the endpoint you chose. SheetGenius receives relay data only if you choose an endpoint run by SheetGenius.

Data collection summary

• Dictation audio uploaded to SheetGenius: none
• In-app analytics and tracking: none
• Saved phrase mappings sent to hosted sync: only when you add a sync key
• Relay data sent: only when you configure and use a relay endpoint

How to revoke permissions

You can revoke Arugula's permissions at any time:

• Microphone: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone > toggle Arugula off
• Accessibility: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility > remove Arugula

This website (getarugula.com) uses Google Analytics to understand traffic patterns. This is standard website analytics and is entirely separate from the Arugula application, which contains no analytics or tracking of any kind.
