Troubleshooting

Arugula isn't inserting text

Arugula needs Accessibility access to insert text at your cursor. To grant it:

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
  2. Click the + button and add Arugula
  3. Make sure the toggle next to Arugula is turned on

If Arugula is already listed, try removing it and re-adding it. Some macOS updates can invalidate accessibility permissions.

Arugula can't hear me

Arugula needs microphone access to capture your speech. To check:

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone
  2. Make sure Arugula is listed and toggled on

If you're using an external microphone, make sure it's set as the input device in System Settings > Sound > Input.

Transcription seems slow

The first transcription after launching Arugula may take a moment while the AI model loads. Subsequent transcriptions should be near-instant. If transcription remains slow, check Activity Monitor for other processes using significant CPU or memory.

Arugula keeps getting a word wrong

Fix the word after Arugula inserts it. Arugula watches for corrections and learns from them. After a few corrections of the same word, Arugula will start getting it right. This works especially well for proper nouns and technical terms.

The hotkey doesn't work

Make sure no other app is using the same key combination. The default hold-to-talk key is Right Option. You can change it in Arugula's preferences. If the hotkey stops working after a macOS update, try restarting Arugula.

I want to reset my correction data

Arugula stores its learned corrections locally. To reset:

  1. Quit Arugula
  2. Open Finder and go to ~/Library/Application Support/Arugula
  3. Delete the corrections file
  4. Relaunch Arugula
